FoundationEvery AI-influenced decision must be explainable in plain language to a regulator, a carrier, or a court. Black boxes are not acceptable at the decision boundary.
RegulatoryAn AI model is only as trustworthy as the data it was trained on. Lineage, metadata, and drift monitoring are operational requirements, not aspirations.
OperationalAI must never be the final decision-maker in consequential insurance decisions without defined human review thresholds. The circuit breaker is not optional.
ControlModels that produce disparate outcomes by protected class create legal, regulatory, and reputational exposure regardless of intent. Proxy discrimination is the primary risk.
ComplianceUncontrolled model changes are the primary operational risk in deployed AI. Every material change requires a formal procedure. The change log is permanent.
GovernanceCompanies are rushing to deploy increasingly powerful AI systems. At the same time, risk management practices in AI are nowhere near the standards applied in other high-risk industries like aviation or pharmaceuticals. Regulation is not keeping pace. The gap between deployment speed and governance maturity is widening every month.
In insurance, the consequences are concrete. Regulatory sanctions. Carrier relationship damage. Claims mispricing that surfaces silently over 12–18 months. Bad faith litigation exposure. These are not hypothetical risks. They are happening now, at companies that moved fast without building the governance to support it.
